Dr. Mohammed Yahaya is a Professor of Medical Microbiology and an Honorary Consultant Clinical Microbiologist at Usmanu Danfodiyo University and Teaching Hospital, Nigeria respectively.
He is a fellow of the West African College of Physicians in Laboratory Medicine (Medical Microbiology) and also a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria from Faculty of Pathology (Medical Microbiology).
He has a master’s in public health (Field Epidemiology) from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and also an International Epidemiology Certificate from the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP) and the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention. He attended Ahmadu Bello University Zaria for his basic medical degree.
He was formerly the Head of Department for both the university and teaching hospital for five years (2018-2022). He has over 17 years of experience in clinical microbiology, infectious diseases epidemiology, vaccine preventable diseases, surveillance & outbreak investigation of infectious diseases and public health.
He is currently the Training Coordinator of the Faculty of Laboratory Medicine, West African College of Physician for the sub region.
Dr. Yahaya’s research interests include infectious diseases, epidemiology, routine immunization, polio eradication, clinical microbiology, and HIV/AIDS. He has also served as a consultant to national and international organizations.
He has supported Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) in different roles, most notably as the team lead during the COVID-19 outbreak/response. He was part of the team that established the existence of Dengue fever and West Nile Virus in Sokoto in 2016. He has also supported Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) in different roles, most notably as the team lead during the COVID-19 outbreak/response. He is currently the Project Coordinator of the Gavi funded Zero Dose Learning Hub (ZDLH) working within the AFENET/AHBN Consortium.
Dr. Mohammed Yahaya was recently awarded the highest grant awardee by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Lawal Suleiman Bilbis on behalf of the Council, Senate, Staff and Students of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria at the just concluded combined convocation for the 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st. Dr Yahaya has also received the United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC’s) Centre for Global Health (CGH) Directors Partnership Award for Significantly improving Hepatitis B birth dose vaccination in Nigeria which would prevent infections and death from Liver disease on May 2023 by the Acting Director, Center for Global Health, United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Yahaya is also actively involved in teaching and training medical students and has supervised over 20 masters, five (5) PhDs and 10 fellowship candidates. Dr. Yahaya has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has presented over 40 papers at local and international conferences. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Medical Association, International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID), the American Society of Microbiology, and the College of Nigerian Pathologists.
Dr. Yahaya is a respected member of the Nigerian medical community and is making significant contributions to the fight against infectious diseases in Nigeria.
He has won seven research grants from local and international funding bodies. He is originally from Katsina State but now lives in Sokoto with his family consisting of five children.
